Welcome on board

Scandlines owns the largest fleet of hybrid ferries in the world. We are proud that these ferries carry the name “Scandlines”. Now two new hybrid ferries are joining the Rostock-Gedser route.

The new ferries “Berlin” and “Copenhagen” have a very open and attractive interior. Here there is space for families with children and those who wish to use the crossing as an opportunity to rest or have a snack and a refreshing drink - or both.

There are many surprises awaiting you onboard. You can already start looking forward to your next crossing from Rostock to Gedser.

Facts about the new hybrid ferries

  • “Berlin” and “Copenhagen”
With a minimal fuel consumption, the new hybrid ferries are now ready to depart from the dock.
  • From drawing board to ferry
The aim was to develop a unique ferry design, its wedge shape embodying dynamism and modernity.
  • Scrubber
Four scrubbers are integrated in the funnel which remove harmful substances from the exhaust gases such as sulphur and fine particles.
  • Integrated white funnel
Leading the way with a modern concept that has minimal fuel consumption
  • Energy-saving solutions
For example through LED lighting and variable-frequency control

  • Sea view guaranteed
Along with its light and airy shopping area, cafe and restaurant, the passenger deck also boasts particularly large windows along the side of the ship, providing fantastic views over the sea.
  • Bulbous bow
At speeds of 21 knots, the bulbous bow reduces the ship’s resistance by about 10 percent.
  • Engines
Fuel-saving Common Rail engines improve the performance of the engines and reduce emissions.
  • Engine room
The main engines provide an output of 19,500kw, of which 1,700kw come from batteries. This results in a speed of 21 knots on the 1 hour and 45 minutes long crossing.
  • Hybrid propulsion system
When consumption is lower, excess energy is stored in the on-board batteries. This is then released when consumption is higher than production.
  • Optimised hull
The hull of the ship was optimised for the sea depths between Rostock and Gedser using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculations.
  • Propulsion
Optimised propulsion system consisting of propellers and two thrusters, which can be rotated through 360 degrees and are used in narrow waterways or during manoeuvres in port.
  • Vehicle decks
2 vehicle decks, which can be loaded with either 6 or 8 lanes of cars.
  • Passenger deck
Large, open passenger deck with fantastic views. From here, through the skylight, you can look down onto the shopping area below.
  • Attractive shopping opportunities
400m² modern onboard shop with skylight

  • Capacity
The hybrid ferries are 169.5m long and 25.4m wide. This results in 1,600 loading metres, and therefore space for 460 cars or 96 lorries, and a capacity for 1,300 passengers.
