On 13 December, Denmark and Sweden are bathed in the warm glow of candlelight: it is Luciadag, the feast of Saint Lucia – one of the most beautiful and atmospheric experiences of the Scandinavian pre-Christmas season.
Early in the morning, the first songs ring out: girls dressed in white with red ribbons sing as they make their way through schools, churches and streets. The procession is led by Lucia, the ‘Queen of Light’, who wears a crown of real candles – a symbol of hope and light in the darkest time of the year.
